Driving or Practice Range?

August 6, 2014

The 4th and final Major of 2014 is here.  Does Tiger play?  Will his back hold up?  Will he hit a driver and if he does – will he find the ball (recently a challenge for El Tigre)?

Every day I see guests come to Fossil Trace and warm-up to play while others practice grooving their swing.  Unlike Tiger and ALL golf professionals of any critter type, many of our local amateurs actually begin warm-up or practice with their driver.  All I can say is OUCH!  It hurts me to even watch and for this, I have moved my chair to the other side of the desk giving me the beautiful view of #1 tee and Table Mountain instead of spine crunching, violent swings visible all day long on the practice range.  Perhaps the name is misleading “driving” range.  At Fossil Trace, we refer to it as the practice range – makes far more sense don’t you think?

To enhance the practice experience, we added the colorful targets in the landing area allowing players to practice specific yardages with the intent of landing shots directly on the target.  Does it work?  Google Zach Johnson (winner of the 2007 Masters after laying up on ALL par 5s at Augusta National yet making 11 out of 16 birdies) or Mike Bender wedge range and see why we believe.

Another option, try it for yourself after warming up w/25 drivers … actually … don’t … please.  Jim Hajek, PGA HP
