A Fitting Tale – as told by Nick Borgeson, PGA Apprentice and Certified Club Fitter at Fossil Trace Golf Club.
Last summer, one of our regular guests here at Fossil Trace, Judy, came out and completed a club fitting with me. She thought she may like Cobra irons best, but when we tested everything (Ping, Cobra, Titleist, Mizuno) and looked at all of the important numbers on the range, like launch angle & spin rate, matched with ball flight she ended up getting the Taylor Made irons. One of the unique aspects of being fit at Fossil Trace by a certified fitter is that we are passionate about finding the right clubs for each person. Judy loved the irons and eventually got some Cobra hybrids to go along with them.
Just recently, I was heading to the back of the driving range to teach and learned that she made a hole in one at Fossil Trace’s 5th hole. I drove over to number 9 tee box and said, “Way to go ACE – a hole in one,” and gave her a big high five! She laughed and said, “Can you believe it?”
I asked her how it happened and she said that the pin was back, playing 108 yards, and that she didn’t want to hit her 8 iron because she wanted to make sure that she made it over the marsh that fronts that green. At this point her husband, Gary, chuckled and made the comment, “Oh, she made it over.”
Judy explained how she had used her 5 hybrid, hit the ball a bit too well, it landed on the middle of the green with a lot of speed, zoomed straight for the pin, smacked it, and then dropped right into the hole.
I said it later that night when I saw her after the round, and I’m going to say it again now, “Way to go, Mom!”
